Characterization

Characterization

The main character of "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is considered a "killer".  The guy (killer) was going to hang a guy of 35 years of age.  In the story it says, "Clearly this was no common killer."  This quote means that he is sneaky.  The man that was hanged was thinking to escape but it was too late, the captain gave the signal to finish him off.  I think the man should have tried to escape. Maybe he would have made it alive.

Characterization

Hatchet By Gary Paulson

In Hatchet by Gary Paulson, the main character named Brian has a hatred type of personality.  In the story, it says, "Brian hated judges as he hated lawyers." This quote shows that he hates judges and lawyers because they think they can choose whatever they want for him since his parents are divorced.  Brian hates lawyers and judges because in his opinion they think they can choose who has custody of him.  He doesn't want to stay with his mom for some reason. He hates how lawyers just sit there thinking that he (Brian) doesn't know what is happening.

Dreams By Langston Hughes

Poem

The theme of "Dreams" by Langston Hughes is that you should never give up on your dreams. The poem says, "Hold fast to dreams/ For when Dreams/ Go life is a Barren Field/ Frozen with Snow." This quote shows that if you give up on your dreams you will have nothing to accomplish or work hard for.

15 DAY CHALLENGE

For the 15 day challenge I am kind of going strong because I forgot to do my challenge on January 22, 2015.  But I will try to keep up with my challenge.  Today Jan. 23, 2015 I will be drawing an island.  I am drawing that because on my mind it is already summer.  I will stay strong for the remaining days.

Theme Of Sparky

THEME

The theme of "Life is Sweet: The Story of Milton Hershey" is that you should never give up on your dreams.  The text says, "Yet with all his hard work the business failed." and then later it says, "Milton opened a confectionery business."  This quote means that he didn't give up even though he failed many times.

15 DAY CHALLENGE

For the 15 day challenge I'm drawing something. So far I have drawn a I love food drawing, One Way or another drawing, Batman drawing, and a cupcake drawing.  I think that I would be able to accomplish the challenge because I love to draw when I am bored.

Compare and Contrast

Similarities

One similarity I noticed between Nelson Mandela and Amelia Earhart was that both got judged for what they believed in.  In the biography I read about Nelson Mandela it said, "Mandela attended Christian schools. After that, he entered a university for black students in 1938. He was expelled two years later for taking part in a protest."  This quote shows that because he was in protest he got expelled for 2 years for going towards something he thought was was right.  In the biography about Amelia Earhart it said, "Although many people thought they were crazy, others thought the idea of flying was fun." This quote shows that people thought that what Amelia Earhart was doing was crazy and dangerous but she didn't care because it was going to be a big accomplishment for her.

Differences

One difference I noticed between Nelson Mandela and Amelia Earhart was that one was the first president of South Africa and the other was the first woman to ride in an airplane over the Atlantic Ocean.  In the biography I read about Nelson Mandela it said, "Mandela took charge of the ANC. He and de Klerk won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.  In 1994 he easily won the presidential election." This quote shows that since Nelson Mandela was a fighter for freedom people appreciated it and voted him for first president of South Africa. In the biography about Amelia Earhart it said, "She had been the first woman to ride in an airplane over the Atlantic although a man flew the plane."  This quote shows that even though a man flew the airplane she was the first WOMAN to ride in an airplane across the Atlantic.

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela attributes

The first attribute that makes Nelson Mandela courageous is feeling fear yet chose to act.  For example,  in the Newsela article it stated, "While Mandela was in prison, it was forbidden to talk about him. No one could show his photo in any public way. But Mandela was still able to sneak out messages to help others fight against apartheid."  This quote means he knew he could get into trouble but he did it anyway.  He wanted people to know he was alright and he will keep fighting for them.

The second attribute that describes Nelson Mandela is he stood up for what is right. For example,  in the Newsela article it stated, "Mandela was best known as a freedom fighter. He led the struggle to end segregation in South Africa. Blacks and other non-white South Africans were forced to live separately and with fewer rights under a system of segregation. It was called apartheid." This quote means that he believed that segregation was wrong. It also shows that the people of South Africa did as well because they voted him for president.

Amelia Earhart

Why was Amelia Earhart courageous?

Amelia Earhart was courageous because she had the courage to stay on course.  For example, "As the plane plummeted toward the water, Amelia struggled to get control. Finally, the warmer air below the clouds melted the ice. Amelia was able to pull the plane out of its spin.".  This quote shows that even though her plane went out of control she tried to prevent it from going towards the ocean. She stayed calm because if she freaked out it wouldn't help at all. Then when the ice melted and her plane was normal she tried again and succeeded.

Also Amelia Earhart showed courage by being patient. My article stated, "Many hours later, Amelia set the plane down in Londonderry, Ireland. She had done it. She had crossed the Atlantic Ocean in an airplane she flew herself." This quote shows that even though it took many hours to fly across the Atlantic Ocean she didn't give up. She kept flying because she wanted to prove something to others.
